A Well-informed Woman Will Make Better Decisions

The National League of Commune/Sangkat in cooperation with the Open Institute, a member of the Cambodian NGO Committee on CEDAW (NGO-CEDAW), held a 2-day training course on 21-22 March 2012. The training course was called "The Right to Access Information, with a Gender Perspective", and was held for Commune Council members and officers from a number of institutions and NGOs. The training was funded by the Open Society Institute, New York (OSI-NY). It was held at the office of the Open Institute and facilitated by the Advocacy and Policy Institute (API). Speaking at the opening, Ms. Chim Manavy, Executive Director of the Open Institute, stated that "this training is organized with the purpose of strengthening the capacity of Councilors, particularly female Councilors, on the right to access and disseminate information such as electoral information." She emphasized that women's access to information is very limited in Cambodia, particularly compared to men. Due to this lack of information, women's participation is seen as passive in discussions on democracy. Therefore, the more information that is made available to women, the more it will help women to increase their knowledge and make better decisions.
Ms. Si Toun, Vice President of the National League of Commune/Sangkat, pointed out the importance of this issue and highly valued the training course. She is quoted as saying "this training is very important to build the capacity of Councilors, especially female Councilors."
